Osha root (Ligusticum porteri) is an Apiaceae root whose characteristic chemistry is a volatile oil rich in phthalides, notably ligustilide, together with simple coumarins, terpenes and phenolic acids.
Ligustilide and related phthalides are lipophilic and volatile, so they partition into ethanol and oil far better than into water, which is why osha is conventionally sold as an ethanolic tincture rather than a water infusion.
Phthalides oxidise and volatilise on exposure to heat, light and air, so ground osha root loses aromatic content during storage faster than an intact dried root.
Coumarins are a recognised constituent class in Apiaceae roots, and the class is one that pharmacognosy flags for attention alongside anticoagulant and antiplatelet medication.
Where Osha Root (Ligusticum) comes from.
Osha is dug wild in the mountains rather than farmed, because nobody has managed to grow it reliably at scale. The aromatic part of the root does not dissolve well in water, which is why it usually comes as an alcohol tincture.
