- Does it work
- It suits women looking at comfort across the monthly cycle in the traditional way, usually inside a multi-herb formula. Ask which extraction was used, since water and alcohol differ.
- How much to take
- Start with 1g of dried root a day and work up toward 3g. That band is what daily traditional use is built on, and water and alcohol extracts do not match gram for gram.
- Time to feel it
- Traditional use runs over two to three cycles rather than days. Nobody has measured a formal onset for the root in a controlled trial.
- The first dose
- Day one is uneventful. Traditional use is counted in cycles, so what happens on a first day tells you very little about the root.
- With regular use
- Weeks to months of steady use is how it is traditionally taken, almost always inside a multi-herb formula rather than alone, for comfort across the monthly cycle.
- How well tolerated
- Not for use in pregnancy. It carries a clotting caution, so check with a prescriber if you take an anticoagulant, and its furanocoumarins can make skin more sun-sensitive.
- How it feels
- Warm and aromatic as a decoction, with a sweet, celery-like bitterness. Any cycle-related change builds across months rather than registering on a given day.

- Timing matters less than consistency. Pick a time that works for you and take it daily.
- Can I take it with other supplements?
- Usually fine. The main thing to watch is not doubling up on the same ingredient from different products. If you're on prescription meds, check with your pharmacist first.
- Any side effects to watch for?
- Most people tolerate it well at recommended doses. GI upset is the most common complaint with any supplement. Start with a lower dose and work up. If something feels off, stop and reassess.

The EPA and DHA in fish oil shift platelet signaling toward less aggregation, and dong quai's coumarins push in the same direction, so the pair can compound how loosely platelets bind. Worth noting for people already watching their clotting.
Garlic's organosulfur compounds reduce platelet stickiness, a mechanism that runs parallel to dong quai's mild coumarin-driven antiplatelet action. Combined, they can add together in how they influence normal clot formation.
Dong quai and astragalus are the two herbs of the classical dang gui bu xue tang pairing, used together for centuries at a fixed ratio. The combination is the oldest established formulation use of dong quai.

Dong quai contains furanocoumarins and St John's wort contains hypericin, and both raise skin sensitivity to sunlight. Taking them together adds two photosensitising constituents at once.
Angelica sinensis carries coumarin-type constituents and is listed in clinical reference sources among botanicals to account for when clotting is a consideration. Nattokinase has its own fibrinolytic activity. The direction of the combination is additive, which is what makes it worth flagging rather than recommending.
Bromelain appears in reference sources among the enzymes associated with reduced platelet aggregation, alongside the fish oil and ginkgo already stored as partners here. Stacking several such ingredients compounds the same direction of effect. This is a caution to disclose rather than a pairing to build around.
Grape seed proanthocyanidins are among the polyphenols associated with reduced platelet aggregation in laboratory and small human work. Adding them to a formula that already contains dong quai, ginkgo and fish oil stacks the same direction repeatedly. Mechanistic and observational grounding, not a combination trial.
Pine bark extract carries the same class of proanthocyanidins as grape seed and is associated with platelet effects in small human studies. Combined with dong quai the effects run in the same direction. The clinically relevant point is disclosure before any procedure, not a benefit claim.
Dong quai is a component of traditional multi-herb formulas studied alongside iron for low iron status, and a 2024 systematic review examined that literature while noting limitations in study quality. Separately, polyphenols in root extracts bind non-heme iron in the gut and reduce its uptake. The two points pull in different directions, which is why timing of an iron dose relative to a herbal decoction matters.
Red clover carries isoflavones that bind oestrogen receptors with a preference for the beta subtype, and it is commonly formulated with dong quai and black cohosh for midlife support. The mechanisms differ, since dong quai's oestrogen receptor activity is not well characterised. Anyone with a hormone-sensitive history should raise the pairing with their clinician.
Ascorbic acid reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and keeps it soluble in the intestinal lumen, which raises non-heme iron uptake and partly offsets polyphenol binding. Dong quai formulas used for iron support are traditionally taken with foods rich in ascorbate. The effect on iron absorption is established; the wider formula claim is not.
Quercetin appears among the flavonoids associated with reduced platelet aggregation in laboratory work, which stacks with the direction already contributed by dong quai and the fish oil stored here. It also chelates non-heme iron. Both points are about combination behaviour rather than a benefit of the pair.

The characteristic constituents of Angelica sinensis root are phthalides, chiefly Z-ligustilide and butylidenephthalide, together with ferulic acid and a fraction of water-soluble polysaccharides. Ligustilide is volatile and degrades on heat and light exposure, which is why extract age and storage change the profile.
Ferulic acid is a phenolic acid that donates a hydrogen atom to reactive species, which is the basis for the antioxidant activity measured in the root's extracts. Antioxidant capacity measured in a tube is a chemical property and not a clinical outcome.
Angelica species carry furanocoumarins, which absorb ultraviolet light and are the established cause of photosensitivity from contact with plants in this family. The relevant amounts in a finished root extract vary with species and processing.
The polysaccharide fraction of the root is water-extractable and does not carry over into a high-ethanol tincture, while the phthalides are far more soluble in ethanol than in water. Extraction solvent therefore determines which chemistry a given product actually contains.
Where Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) comes from.
The plant is grown in the mountains of western China and the root is dug up after about two years. It is washed, tied in bundles and dried slowly, which is the step where the aromatic compounds start to fade. To make an extract, the root is either simmered in water or soaked in alcohol, and those two methods pull out genuinely different compounds from the same root. The liquid is then filtered, concentrated gently and tested to confirm it is the right species, since several close relatives are sold under similar names.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Grown mainly in Gansu, Yunnan and Sichuan in China at altitude, and harvested after two growing seasons in late autumn. Root quality varies with soil and with the rhizosphere microbial community, which is an active area of agronomic study for this crop.
Roots are washed, bundled and dried slowly, traditionally with smoke or gentle heat. Drying is the step where volatile phthalides are lost, so method and temperature change the finished chemistry.
Sliced root is either decocted in hot water, which carries polysaccharides and ferulic acid, or extracted with an ethanol and water mixture, which carries the phthalides. The choice of solvent decides which chemistry ends up in the bottle.
The liquid is filtered off the spent root and concentrated under reduced pressure to limit heat exposure of the volatile fraction.
Batches are assayed for ferulic acid or ligustilide by chromatography, and species identity is confirmed, since several Angelica species are traded under similar common names and differ in furanocoumarin content.
