Jatamansi is the dried rhizome and root of Nardostachys jatamansi, a plant in the Caprifoliaceae family closely related to valerian, which is why the two are discussed together.
The characteristic constituents are sesquiterpenes and coumarins, notably jatamansone and nardostachone, along with the aromatic oil that gives the root its heavy earthy scent.
The active sesquiterpenes are lipophilic, so a hydroalcoholic extract pulls a different constituent profile from the root than a water infusion does.

It is the root of a Himalayan mountain plant. The roots are washed, dried in the shade so the aromatic oils survive, then ground into powder or soaked in alcohol to pull out the active parts. The plant is protected, so responsible suppliers use cultivated rather than wild-dug root.
