Magnesium is reabsorbed in the loop and distal tubule, and higher urine flow carries more of it out. Pairing the mineral with a flow-raising botanical keeps the balance level.

Water and sodium leave together, so a preparation used for fluid turnover shifts sodium balance as well. Sodium intake therefore sets how noticeable the effect is. This is basic renal physiology rather than a property of the herb alone.
Glycyrrhizin from licorice promotes sodium retention and potassium loss, which pulls against a preparation used to support fluid clearance. Combined use makes potassium status harder to predict and is worth flagging rather than recommending. The interaction is established pharmacology, not a combination trial.
Curcumin and the flavonoid and rotenoid constituents of punarnava both act on cellular redox handling in laboratory models. Ayurvedic formulations commonly place the two together. The shared pathway is mechanistic; human combination data is not something a source states.
Silymarin and punarnava extracts are both studied for hepatic redox handling in animal and cell models. Blends pair them for that overlap. The evidence here is preclinical and should be read as mechanistic.

Ginger is a standard anupana or adjuvant in Ayurvedic practice, added to improve tolerance of a herb taken on an empty stomach. Its effect on gastric emptying can change how quickly a co-dosed extract is presented for absorption. This is formulation convention with a plausible mechanism behind it.
Guduchi and punarnava sit together in several classical compound preparations. The rationale is traditional formulation logic rather than a measured interaction. Both are supplied as whole-plant or root extracts with variable constituent profiles.
Amla supplies ascorbate and hydrolysable tannins that regenerate oxidised polyphenols in solution, an established antioxidant recycling relationship. Ayurvedic blends pair it with punarnava routinely. The recycling chemistry is established; a clinical consequence for the pair is not stated by a source.
Ascorbate reduces flavonoid radicals back to their active form, a well-characterised chemistry that applies to the flavonoid glycosides in punarnava. That keeps the polyphenol pool in a reduced state for longer in vitro. Whether it changes anything measurable in a person taking both is not established.
Polyphenol-rich plant extracts bind divalent minerals in the gut lumen and lower the fraction available for uptake. A zinc dose taken in the same sitting as a tannin-containing herbal extract is partly bound. Separating the two by a couple of hours avoids it.
Tannins and other polyphenols form insoluble complexes with non-heme iron in the gut, a well-characterised effect across tea, coffee and herbal extracts. Punarnava extract taken with an iron dose can reduce iron uptake from that dose. Ascorbate taken with the iron partly offsets the binding.
Glutathione peroxidase depends on a selenocysteine residue, so selenium status sets the capacity of that arm of cellular redox handling. Plant polyphenols act mainly through direct radical scavenging and signalling rather than through that enzyme. The two act on the same broad system by different routes.
Boerhavia diffusa extract was studied against hexavalent chromium exposure in fish, where chelation and redox handling of the metal were the proposed mechanisms. Applied to supplements, a polyphenol-rich extract taken alongside a chromium supplement can bind part of the dose in the gut. The binding chemistry is general; the fish study is not evidence about supplemental chromium in people.

Boerhavia diffusa root and whole plant carry a characteristic rotenoid group known as the boeravinones, alongside the alkaloid punarnavine, flavonoid glycosides such as eupalitin galactoside, and lignans including liriodendrin.
Polyphenol content means the extract binds divalent minerals in the gut lumen, the same chelation chemistry that makes tea and other tannin-rich preparations reduce non-heme iron uptake when taken together.
Because any increase in urinary water loss carries sodium and potassium with it, electrolyte status is the physiological variable to watch with preparations used this way.
Constituent content varies with plant part, season and extraction solvent, so a root extract, a whole-plant powder and an aqueous decoction are chemically different preparations even under the same botanical name.
