Taking a separate iodine supplement alongside it stacks two sources of the same nutrient, so total intake rises in a way neither label shows on its own. The pairing supports normal thyroid hormone production, and the practical point is that intake should be counted across both.
The iodothyronine deiodinases that convert thyroxine to the more active triiodothyronine are selenoproteins, so selenium status sets how well an iodide supply is used downstream. An iodine-bearing seaweed supplies substrate; selenium supplies the enzyme machinery. This is textbook biochemistry rather than a combination trial result.
Thyroid hormone is built by adding iodine to tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin. Iodide from seaweed has no use without the tyrosine backbone, which normal protein intake usually covers. The pairing is mechanistic and is not evidence that supplemental tyrosine adds anything on top of an adequate diet.
Thyroid peroxidase, the enzyme that incorporates iodide into tyrosine residues, is a heme enzyme and depends on iron. The second half of the interaction runs the other way: the sulfated galactans in sea moss form a viscous gel that can slow the absorption of a mineral dose taken in the same sitting. Spacing an iron dose away from a sea moss gel is ordinary formulation practice.
Thyroid hormone receptors carry zinc-finger domains, so zinc status affects how the hormone signal is read once it is made. Sea moss contributes to the iodide side of that axis and nothing to the zinc side. The two sit at different points of the same normal process.
Sulfated galactans carry a dense negative charge and bind divalent cations, which is the same property that makes carrageenan gel in the presence of calcium and potassium. A calcium dose taken inside a sea moss gel can be held in the gel matrix and released more slowly. The size of that effect in people has not been measured here, so it is a mechanistic caution rather than a quantified loss.
Sulfated galactans reach the colon largely undigested by human enzymes and are fermented by parts of the resident microbiota. That makes sea moss a substrate a live culture can act on rather than a partner that acts on the organism directly. Which taxa benefit depends on the strain and the polysaccharide structure, and that has not been mapped for this species here.
Both are fermentable soluble carbohydrates that reach the colon, so combining them raises total fermentable load. People sensitive to gas and bloating feel that addition before they feel any benefit. Dose the pair up slowly rather than starting at the sum of two full servings.
Psyllium and sea moss both build viscosity in the gut lumen, and the effect of taking them together is additive on gel strength rather than complementary. Water intake has to rise with the pair. Viscosity is also what slows the absorption of anything else swallowed at the same time, which is why spacing matters more with two gel formers than one.
Seaweeds carry appreciable potassium and sodium from the surrounding seawater, with the ratio depending on processing and rinsing. A sea moss serving therefore adds to an electrolyte total rather than sitting outside it. The contribution is real but not standardised across products.
Ascorbate keeps non-heme iron in the reduced ferrous state and forms a soluble complex with it, which raises absorption from plant and algal matrices. Any iron carried in a seaweed is non-heme by definition. This is general iron absorption chemistry applied to this matrix, not a measured result for sea moss.
Sea moss and collagen peptides are routinely blended in skin and joint products, and the pairing is a formulation and marketing convention rather than a tested combination. No combination study is cited here. Read it as a formulation habit, not as a mechanism.
Glucomannan is another high-viscosity soluble fibre, so the combination raises gel strength and water demand together. Two hydrocolloids in one dose can thicken enough to matter for swallowing if taken with little water. The pairing has not been measured together here.

Irish moss is the dried thallus of the red alga Chondrus crispus, and its main structural carbohydrates are sulfated galactans of the carrageenan family, which human digestive enzymes do not break down.
Those sulfated galactans hydrate into a viscous gel, which is why the same polysaccharide class is used industrially as a thickener and why a sea moss gel slows gastric emptying and raises lumenal viscosity.
Marine algae accumulate iodide from seawater, so the material supplies iodine, the element the thyroid incorporates into tyrosine residues during normal thyroid hormone synthesis.
The same concentrating behaviour applies to other elements in the growing water, so mineral content including heavy metals varies with harvest site and is a testing question rather than a fixed label value.
