Galium species carry flavonol glycosides of the rutin and quercetin class, so a rutin supplement adds more of a compound already present in the herb. The aerial parts of Galium aparine contain iridoid glycosides, principally asperuloside and monotropein, which are the characteristic constituent class of the Rubiaceae family it belongs to.
The herb also carries flavonol glycosides of the rutin and quercetin class, along with phenolic acids and small quantities of anthraquinone derivatives typical of the Rubiaceae.
Iridoid glycosides are polar and poorly absorbed intact. Gut microbial beta-glucosidases cleave the sugar to release the aglycone, so the microbiota sit on the absorption path for this constituent class.
Any increase in urine volume carries dissolved solutes with it, so water-soluble minerals including sodium, potassium and magnesium leave in proportion to the water. This is renal physiology and applies to any aquaretic regardless of the plant it comes from.
Where Cleavers (Galium aparine) comes from.
Cleavers is the sticky, clinging weed that catches on clothing in spring hedgerows. It gets cut, and then either goes straight into alcohol while still fresh or is dried for tea and capsules. Drying changes its chemistry, which is why traditional herbalists have always asked for the fresh plant. Almost nobody sells it against a measured marker compound, so what you get depends on the plant part, the harvest and how it was handled.
