Proven for dental pain and oral health. Strong antimicrobial. Excellent antioxidant. Best used topically for pain or orally for antimicrobial support.

100-500 mg clove extract orally, or 1-3 drops of clove oil topically (diluted) for dental pain.
Time to feel it
On gum tissue, the warm numbing from eugenol arrives within a couple of minutes. Swallowed as an extract, there is a warm spicy note and nothing more immediate.

Questions people ask about Clove.

Can I put clove oil directly on a toothache?
Dilute it first. Pure clove oil is too strong and can burn your gums. Mix 1 drop with a carrier oil (coconut oil works) and apply with a cotton ball. Or just chew on a whole clove.
Is clove oil safe to swallow?
In very small amounts (1-2 drops diluted), it's generally well tolerated. But don't drink essential oils casually. Stick to capsule supplements or culinary amounts for internal use.
Does clove actually numb pain?
Yes. Eugenol blocks the same sodium channels that pharmaceutical local anesthetics target. It's a genuine numbing agent, which is why dentists still use it.
Can I use cloves for bad breath?
Yes. Chewing on 1-2 whole cloves after meals freshens breath through antimicrobial action and aromatic compounds. This has been done for centuries.

Eugenol is a phenylpropanoid phenol. The free hydroxyl on its aromatic ring donates a hydrogen atom to chain-carrying lipid radicals, and that's the chemistry behind how it scavenges radicals in lab studies.

Clove bud carries hydrolysable gallotannins and eugenyl glucoside alongside its free eugenol, so a whole-bud powder and a distilled oil are chemically different preparations with different constituent line-ups.

Where Clove comes from.

Cloves are flower buds picked before they open, then dried in the sun until they go hard and brown. Whole cloves and clove oil are not the same thing: the oil is steamed out of crushed buds and is much more concentrated, which is why it gets diluted before use. The buds also hold tannins that the oil leaves behind.
