Equisetum contains thiaminase, an enzyme that cleaves and inactivates thiamine, which is why raw or poorly processed horsetail lowers thiamine status. Taking the two together in one formula works against the B1 dose.
The thiaminase activity in horsetail breaks the thiamine molecule apart, so co-formulation reduces how much intact B1 is available. Heat-treated extracts inactivate the enzyme, which is the standard formulation answer.
Silicon is incorporated into connective tissue and is associated with the cross-linking of collagen and glycosaminoglycans, while collagen peptides supply the peptide substrate. Matrix building draws on both the mineral and the protein fragments.
Ascorbate is the required cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase, the enzymes that stabilise the collagen triple helix. Without it the collagen a silica formula aims at cannot mature.
Biotin acts as the carboxylase cofactor in the cells that make keratin, while silicon contributes to the structural matrix of hair shaft and nail plate. The two occupy different steps of the same structural pathway.
MSM supplies sulfur used in the disulfide bridges that give keratin its strength, a different structural contribution from silicon. Hair and nail formulas combine mineral scaffold with sulfur cross-links.
Zinc is a cofactor for the metalloproteinases and polymerases involved in normal skin and nail turnover, which silicon does not provide. Both sit in the same structural pathway at different steps.
Marine collagen peptides deliver glycine, proline and hydroxyproline fragments while silicon is associated with cross-linking of the matrix they enter. The mineral and the peptide reach the same tissue from different sides.
Silicon is associated with glycosaminoglycan structure, and hyaluronic acid is the glycosaminoglycan that holds water in that matrix. Formulators pair them so both the fibre and the hydrating gel are supplied.
Bone mineral is deposited onto a collagen scaffold, and silicon supports the formation of that scaffold while calcium supplies the mineral phase. Neither builds normal bone structure alone.
Vitamin D drives intestinal calcium absorption and osteoblast signalling, the upstream step that determines whether a silicon-supported matrix is mineralised. Bone formulas carry both for that reason.
Vitamin K2 carboxylates osteocalcin so calcium binds into the bone matrix, complementing the collagen scaffold silicon supports. The pairing covers scaffold, mineral and the protein that directs it.
Boron influences the handling of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D in bone tissue and is one of the trace minerals routinely formulated alongside silicon. Both are structural trace elements rather than bulk minerals.
Horsetail increases urine output, and higher urine volume carries more potassium out with it. A formula leaning on the diuretic action should account for potassium replacement.
Silicon is the reason horsetail is used at all, and the element is only absorbed as monomeric orthosilicic acid. Most of the silicon in the dried plant is polymerised biogenic silica, which passes through largely unabsorbed unless processing or gastric conditions release monomers. Comparing a horsetail extract with a stabilised orthosilicic acid preparation is comparing two delivery states of the same element.
Lysyl oxidase is a copper-dependent enzyme that forms the covalent cross-links between collagen and elastin fibres. Silicon is associated with the same connective tissue matrix but cannot substitute for the cofactor. A connective-tissue formula built on silicon without adequate copper leaves the cross-linking step short of its metal.
Manganese is the cofactor for the glycosyltransferases that assemble glycosaminoglycan chains onto proteoglycan cores in cartilage and skin matrix. Silicon has been described at those same glycosaminoglycan sites. The cofactor requirement is settled; the silicon association is structural description rather than a demonstrated enzymatic role.
Roughly a third of collagen residues are proline or hydroxyproline, and proline is the substrate prolyl hydroxylase converts using ascorbate and iron. Supplying silicon without the amino acid backbone gives the matrix a trace element and no bricks. Pairing them is formulation logic rather than a tested combination.
Lysine residues are the ones lysyl oxidase modifies to form collagen cross-links, and hydroxylysine also carries the sugar attachments on collagen. It is the amino acid partner to the copper enzyme. As with proline, this is the substrate side of a step silicon is only associated with.
Horsetail carries tannins and flavonoid polyphenols, and polyphenols bind non-heme iron in the gut lumen to form complexes that are not absorbed. Taken in the same sitting as an iron supplement or an iron-containing meal, a tannin-bearing herb extract lowers the iron taken up. Separating the doses by a couple of hours is the usual handling.
Horsetail has a long-standing aquaretic reputation, meaning increased water excretion, and traditional and monograph use has always been accompanied by advice to keep fluid intake up. Where urine volume rises, electrolyte replacement becomes a practical consideration. The aquaretic effect is described as water loss rather than a sodium-wasting mechanism.
Caffeine increases urine output through adenosine receptor antagonism at the kidney, and horsetail is described as increasing it through a different route. Taken together the two effects would be expected to combine, and the pairing has not been measured that way. This is worth flagging in a formula that already carries a stimulant.
Magnesium is handled renally and a sustained rise in urine output is a route by which any mineral can be lost. This is a general consequence of aquaresis rather than anything specific to horsetail chemistry. It belongs on a formulation checklist, not in a claim.

The silica in horsetail is mostly locked in a glassy plant form. Only the small dissolved version gets absorbed, so the number on the label is not the number that gets in.
The body does not stockpile silicon. It comes in and goes out through the kidneys within hours.

It is a wild green stem that gets cut, dried carefully enough to kill an enzyme that would otherwise destroy vitamin B1, and then either ground up or soaked to pull out one part of it. What comes out depends on whether water or alcohol was used.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
Sterile green summer stems are cut, most commonly from wild collection in eastern Europe and China and increasingly from cultivation. Species identity is the controlling step, because Equisetum palustre grows in overlapping habitat and carries a different alkaloid profile.
Stems are dried, and the temperature profile of that drying determines whether thiaminase survives into the finished material. This is the step the traditional literature is most concerned with.
Hot water favours the mineral and silica-associated fraction; ethanol and water together favour the flavonoid glycosides. The choice determines what the finished extract actually contains.
