Maca hypocotyl is a starchy root that carries plant-form iron alongside polyphenols that bind it. Ascorbate reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and holds it soluble through the duodenum. Taken in the same meal, it raises how much of that plant iron is available. This is standard mineral absorption chemistry, not a maca-specific finding.
The hypocotyl is a storage root and its bulk is granular starch that resists digestion until gelatinised. Amylase-containing enzyme blends are added to raw maca powders for that reason, and gelatinisation by heat and pressure is the alternative route. Undigested starch reaching the colon is the usual source of the bloating people report with raw powder. The pairing is a digestibility measure rather than a potency one.
Arginine feeds nitric oxide synthesis, a well-characterised vasodilatory pathway. Maca is used alongside it in formulas aimed at circulation and libido. No combination study exists and maca has no established nitric oxide mechanism of its own. Read it as formulation practice.
Maca is marketed in energy blends that frequently also carry caffeine. Any subjective stimulation people attribute to maca will be difficult to separate from a caffeine dose in the same capsule. Maca contains no methylxanthines, so the additive part comes from the formula, not the root. Total caffeine on the label is the number to read.
Andean maca and Himalayan cordyceps arrive in the same adaptogen and endurance formulas from different traditions. Neither has a mechanism that predicts the other. There is no combination trial. The grounding is use pattern, which is why the confidence stays low.
Magnesium is a cofactor across ATP-dependent metabolism and is added to most energy formulas as a matter of course.
