No study gave these as a pair, so they are not in the card above. But the reason they belong together is settled biochemistry, not a guess, so it is worth knowing.
Carnosic acid and carnosol act mainly at the lipid-water interface while tocopherols work inside the lipid phase, so the two cover different sites in the same oil. Blends are routinely used at lower total levels than either alone would need. This is settled food-technology practice.
When a phenolic antioxidant quenches a peroxyl radical it becomes a radical itself, and ascorbate reduces it back to the active form. Ascorbyl palmitate is used where the oil phase needs a lipid-soluble version of the same chemistry. The recycling relationship is textbook radical chemistry.
Long-chain omega-3 oils oxidise quickly because of their many double bonds, producing the peroxides and aldehydes measured by peroxide and anisidine values. Rosemary phenolic diterpenes interrupt the propagation step in that chain. The pairing protects the oil in the bottle rather than adding a physiological effect.
Phospholipid-bound polyunsaturated fatty acids oxidise readily at the membrane interface where rosemary diterpenes concentrate. Krill oil also carries astaxanthin, so the antioxidant set overlaps. Rosemary extract is used here as a processing aid, not as an active.
Flaxseed oil carries three double bonds per alpha-linolenic acid molecule and develops rancid notes fast at room temperature. Rosemary extract is one of the label-friendly antioxidants used to slow that. Cold storage and nitrogen headspace do more of the work than any additive.
Whole rosemary leaf contains carnosic acid, carnosol and rosmarinic acid at low concentration, and the extract is those compounds concentrated. The two appear on labels for different reasons, flavour versus oxidation control. They are the same chemistry at different strengths.
Oregano's phenolic monoterpenes donate hydrogen to lipid radicals in the same way rosemary diterpenes do. Combined herb extracts are used in oil systems where a single one is not enough. The combination is documented in food chemistry rather than in human studies.
Thyme carries rosmarinic acid alongside thymol, so its antioxidant profile overlaps directly with rosemary's water-soluble fraction. Blends of Lamiaceae extracts are common in natural preservation systems. The evidence base is food-science testing, not clinical work.
EGCG and related catechins are strong hydrogen donors and also chelate transition metals. Because they are water-soluble and rosemary diterpenes are lipid-soluble, the pair covers both phases of an emulsion. This is established practice in food and supplement formulation.
Trace ferrous iron drives Fenton chemistry that generates hydroxyl radicals and accelerates rancidity in an oil. Rosmarinic acid binds such metal ions and reduces their catalytic availability. In an iron-containing multivitamin this chelation is why the two need to be considered together at formulation.
Trace copper accelerates hydroperoxide decomposition even at parts-per-million levels. Phenolic compounds including rosmarinic acid complex the ion and blunt that catalysis. This is standard metal-chelation chemistry in food emulsions.
Citric acid sequesters trace metal ions in the aqueous phase, removing the catalyst that phenolic antioxidants would otherwise have to keep up with. The two act on different steps of the same process. The combination is long-standing food-processing convention.
Phospholipids position antioxidants at the oil-water interface where oxidation initiates, and they also help disperse an extract through a lipid phase. Rosemary extract is often supplied pre-dispersed in a lecithin or oil carrier. The role is delivery and placement rather than an added antioxidant effect of its own.
Medium-chain triglycerides are essentially free of double bonds, so they do not add to the oxidative load they are carrying an antioxidant for. That makes them a practical diluent for oil-soluble rosemary extract. This is a handling and dosing convenience.
Astaxanthin quenches singlet oxygen efficiently while rosemary diterpenes break peroxyl radical chains, so the two address different initiation and propagation routes. Combined use appears in marine oil formulations. The rationale is chemical rather than clinical.
