Glycerol distributes through body water and raises plasma osmolality, which reduces the renal free water clearance that would otherwise drain an ingested fluid load. Sodium holds that water in the extracellular space, so the two work on the same retention problem from different sides.
Glycerol only helps hydration when it is taken with a substantial fluid and electrolyte load, since it is the osmotic pull and not the molecule itself that holds water. Electrolyte blends supply the sodium, potassium and chloride that keep the retained fluid distributed.
Glycerin is the standard plasticiser in a softgel shell, sitting between gelatin chains so the film stays flexible instead of turning brittle. The glycerin to gelatin ratio is what sets shell hardness.
