Ze xie and fu ling are two of the five herbs in the classical Wu Ling San fluid-moving formula. Their pairing is the oldest and most fixed use of ze xie.
Zhu ling sits with ze xie in the same classical formula, adding a second fungal diuretic to the alisol triterpenes of the rhizome. The two are conventionally used together.
Bai zhu is the spleen-strengthening member of the same five-herb grouping, balancing the draining action of ze xie. The combination is standard traditional practice.
Gui zhi, the cinnamon twig, completes the classical fluid-moving formula as the warming member that mobilises surface fluid. Its presence offsets the cooling drain of ze xie.

Huang Qi is paired with fluid-moving herbs in classical formulas on a tonifying-plus-draining logic, so the combination has a long documented history of use. Alisma orientale rhizome is characterised chemically by protostane-type triterpenes, principally the alisols, of which alisol A, alisol B and their 23-acetate esters are the compounds a Ze Xie extract is usually assayed against.
Urine volume is set by the balance between glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption of sodium and water. An agent that reduces sodium reabsorption increases the osmotic load reaching the collecting duct and with it the water carried out.
Sustained increases in urine output carry electrolytes with them in proportion to flow, so potassium, magnesium and sodium balance are the relevant considerations with anything that supports fluid clearance over time.
