Arginine is the substrate nitric oxide synthase converts to nitric oxide, while grape seed polyphenols support eNOS activity and reduce the superoxide that would otherwise consume the nitric oxide produced. One supplies the molecule and the other keeps it in circulation.
Citrulline is recycled to arginine in the kidney and raises plasma arginine more reliably than oral arginine itself. Paired with grape seed polyphenols it feeds a nitric oxide route the polyphenols help preserve.
Dietary nitrate is reduced to nitrite and then nitric oxide by oral bacteria and tissue reductases, entirely separate from the eNOS route grape seed polyphenols support. The two routes into one signalling molecule are additive.

Polyphenols with catechol and galloyl groups chelate divalent metal cations in the gut lumen, and zinc is among them.
