Supplemental amylase acts on the same substrate by cleaving alpha-1,4 bonds. People who find raw root powder heavy in the stomach are reacting to unmodified starch, not to the alkaloid fraction. This is digestion chemistry.

Maca is used traditionally in formulas aimed at sexual function and stamina, a different mechanistic entry point. Citrulline bypasses first-pass gut and liver metabolism and is converted to arginine in the kidney, which raises circulating arginine more reliably than arginine taken by mouth. Their phytochemistry is unrelated: withanolides in one, macamides and glucosinolates in the other. That difference is the argument for combining them. Evidence for the pair specifically is absent.

Piperine slows several cytochrome P450 isoforms and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase activity in the gut wall and liver, which raises systemic exposure to compounds cleared that way. Maca's macamides are lipophilic amides that plausibly travel the same route. The inhibition itself is established; its size for maca constituents specifically has not been measured. It also raises exposure to anything else in the same capsule, which is worth knowing.

Red Maca + BoronMineral used alongside botanicals in hormone-support formulas

Boron appears in formulas that also carry maca, on the grounds that it influences steroid hormone handling and mineral metabolism. The two act by unrelated routes and are not known to interfere with each other. Nothing has tested them together.

Maca is the root of Lepidium meyenii, a Brassicaceae species, and its characteristic chemistry is glucosinolates plus the maca-specific macamides and macaenes, which are long-chain fatty acid amides and alkenes.
