Piperine inhibits intestinal and hepatic drug-metabolising enzymes and efflux transport, which raises systemic exposure to many co-ingested plant compounds. Eurycoma longifolia root is characterised by quassinoids, chiefly eurycomanone, along with canthin-6-one alkaloids and glycosaponins; commercial extracts are standardised against one or more of these markers.
Hot water extraction of the root concentrates the polar, water-soluble fraction, which is why standardised water extracts differ in constituent profile from ethanol extracts of the same plant material.
Botanical extracts of this root are dosed by marker content rather than by raw plant weight, so two products at the same milligram figure can deliver different amounts of the characterised constituents.
Where Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) comes from.
It comes from the root of a Southeast Asian tree. The root is simmered in hot water, the liquid is filtered and dried into a powder, then tested so each batch carries a stated amount of its marker compound. Some makers use alcohol instead of water, which pulls out a slightly different mix.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
The taproot of a slender understorey tree native to Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Root age drives constituent content, and mature roots take years to reach harvest size, which is why wild collection pressure and cultivated plantations both feature in the supply chain.
Milled root is held in heated water so the polar fraction, including eurycomanone and glycoprotein material, moves into solution. Ethanol or hydroalcoholic extraction is used instead when a manufacturer wants the less polar alkaloid fraction.
The liquor is filtered clear of plant solids and concentrated under reduced pressure, then usually spray dried onto a carrier such as maltodextrin.
