The active fraction of turmeric root is the curcuminoids: curcumin, demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. A standardised 95 percent curcuminoid extract is far more concentrated in these than the dried root powder, which typically carries a low single-digit percentage.

Curcumin is poorly water-soluble and is rapidly conjugated by intestinal and hepatic UDP-glucuronosyltransferases and sulfotransferases. Most of an oral dose appears in blood as glucuronide and sulfate conjugates rather than free curcumin.
