Magnesium is bulky, so a one-tablet multivitamin can carry only a fraction of the daily requirement. A separate magnesium dose is the usual companion for that reason.
Gram-level calcium in the same serving competes with zinc and iron for shared divalent transporters. Calcium is normally taken at a different time from the multivitamin.
Vitamins A, D, E and K need dietary fat and mixed micelles to be absorbed, and an oil taken alongside supplies it. Long-chain omega-3s are also absent from tablet multivitamins.
Most multivitamins carry a baseline vitamin D amount well under what many people take. An additional D3 dose raises the total without duplicating anything else in the tablet.
Vitamin D raises calcium absorption and vitamin K dependent proteins direct where that calcium is deposited. Multivitamins usually carry K1 or very little K2, so MK-7 fills the gap.
Adequate choline intake is measured in hundreds of milligrams, so it cannot fit into a multivitamin tablet alongside everything else. It is the classic separate addition.
Multivitamins already carry zinc, and stacking a separate high zinc dose on top pushes the zinc to copper ratio out of balance over time. Count the tablet's contribution before adding more.
Zinc induces intestinal metallothionein, which binds copper and lowers its uptake, so sustained zinc needs copper alongside. Well-built multivitamins pair the two for this reason.
Ascorbate in or alongside the tablet reduces ferric iron and counters phytate binding, raising uptake of the mineral fraction. It is why vitamin C sits in most multivitamin bases.
Iron, zinc, calcium and manganese compete for the divalent metal transporter DMT1 at the intestinal brush border, so a large dose of one reduces uptake of the others taken at the same time. This is the reason many multivitamins aimed at men omit iron entirely rather than dosing it alongside zinc and calcium. Where iron is present, the competition is a formulation fact worth stating rather than a benefit.
Methylcobalamin is the cofactor for methionine synthase, the enzyme that hands a methyl group from 5-methyltetrahydrofolate to homocysteine. Without adequate B12 the folate pool becomes trapped in its methyl form and cannot be recycled. A multivitamin that carries folate without adequate B12 leaves that trap in place, which is why the two are always formulated together.
Folate supplies the one-carbon units for thymidylate synthesis and for the remethylation of homocysteine to methionine. It works only in concert with B12 and B6 at adjacent steps of the same cycle. High folate intake can normalise a haematological marker while underlying B12 status remains low, so the marker and the status are not the same thing.
Riboflavin becomes FAD, the cofactor for methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase and for pyridoxine 5-phosphate oxidase. That means riboflavin status gates the activation of both folate and vitamin B6 within the same tablet. It is one of the quieter reasons a full B complex behaves differently from single B vitamins.
Pyridoxal 5-phosphate is the cofactor for cystathionine beta-synthase, the enzyme that routes homocysteine down the transsulfuration branch toward cysteine. Folate and B12 handle the remethylation branch. A multivitamin covers both exits from homocysteine only when all three are present.
Alpha-tocopherol terminates lipid peroxidation chains in membranes and is left as a tocopheroxyl radical. Ascorbate regenerates it back to the active form at the membrane surface, and the resulting ascorbyl radical is itself recycled by glutathione-dependent systems. This is the network reason a multivitamin carries the fat-soluble and water-soluble antioxidants together.
Beta-carotene is cleaved by beta-carotene 15,15-dioxygenase to yield retinal, which is reduced to retinol. Conversion efficiency varies substantially between individuals because of common genetic variation in that enzyme. A formula that supplies both preformed retinol and beta-carotene is covering that variability rather than doubling a dose.
Selenium is built into the active site of glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases, the enzymes that reduce peroxides using glutathione. That places it in the same defence network as vitamins C and E rather than in a parallel one. Selenium also sits alongside iodine in thyroid hormone handling, which is a second reason it appears in a daily formula.
Iodine is incorporated directly into thyroglobulin to build thyroxine, and selenium-dependent deiodinases then convert thyroxine to the active triiodothyronine. Neither element can do the job without the other. This pairing is textbook endocrine biochemistry rather than a tested supplement combination.
Molybdenum forms the molybdopterin cofactor for sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase. Sulfite oxidase in particular completes the sulfur amino acid pathway that B6 opens. It is included in a daily formula at trace amounts precisely because those enzymes have no alternative cofactor.
Manganese shares the DMT1 transporter with iron, so iron status influences manganese uptake and vice versa. It is also the metal in mitochondrial superoxide dismutase, which is why formulas include it at trace amounts. Both facts, the competition and the enzymatic role, belong in the same sentence when explaining why the dose stays small.
Trivalent chromium is included in daily formulas for its role in amplifying insulin receptor signalling. It is carried in plasma on transferrin, the iron transport protein, which links its handling to iron status within the same tablet. The amounts used are in micrograms.
Boron influences how the body handles calcium, magnesium and vitamin D, and it affects steroid hormone metabolism in ways that have been measured as marker changes rather than clinical outcomes. It appears in men's formulas for that reason. The mechanistic picture is clearer than the outcome evidence.
Lycopene is a non-provitamin A carotenoid that concentrates in specific tissues and requires dietary fat and bile for micellar uptake, the same absorption route as the fat-soluble vitamins in the formula. It competes with beta-carotene and lutein for space in those micelles when all three are dosed at once. That competition is why carotenoid amounts in a multivitamin are modest.
Lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and lycopene all partition into the same mixed micelles and compete for incorporation. A large single-carotenoid dose can lower the plasma appearance of the others taken with it. In a multivitamin this argues for balanced trace amounts rather than one dominant carotenoid.
Vitamins A, D, E and K and the carotenoids need dietary fat and bile acids to form the micelles that carry them to the enterocyte. Taking a multivitamin with a fat source is the single most practical determinant of how much of the fat-soluble fraction is absorbed. Medium-chain triglycerides are one such source, though long-chain fats stimulate bile release more strongly.
Ubiquinol regenerates alpha-tocopherol within lipid membranes, working alongside the vitamin C and vitamin E already in a daily formula. It also carries electrons in the respiratory chain. It is not present in most standard multivitamins, so it is usually a separate addition rather than an in-tablet component.
Biotin is the covalently bound cofactor for the carboxylases that run gluconeogenesis, fatty acid synthesis and branched-chain amino acid catabolism. It is a standard component of a daily B complex. High biotin doses are known to interfere with several streptavidin-biotin clinical laboratory assays, which is worth knowing before a blood draw.
Piperine inhibits intestinal and hepatic glucuronidation and P-glycoprotein efflux, which raises systemic exposure to a range of co-administered compounds. In a multivitamin it is added with that intent for the polyphenol and carotenoid fraction. The same mechanism means it can raise exposure to medications, so it is not a neutral inclusion.

Vitamins A, D, E and K and the carotenoids are absorbed only after they partition into bile salt micelles in the small intestine, so their uptake depends on dietary fat and normal bile flow. The water-soluble vitamins in the same tablet do not share that requirement.
Folate, vitamin B12, vitamin B6 and riboflavin operate at four consecutive stations of one-carbon metabolism. Riboflavin as FAD activates MTHFR, folate carries the methyl group, B12 as methylcobalamin transfers it to homocysteine, and B6 as pyridoxal 5-phosphate opens the alternative transsulfuration exit.
Zinc and copper compete for absorption because a high zinc intake induces metallothionein in the enterocyte, which binds copper preferentially and sheds it with the cell. This is why formulas carrying substantial zinc also carry copper.
Ascorbate reduces dietary ferric iron to the ferrous form that DMT1 transports and keeps it soluble past the duodenum, which raises non-heme iron absorption. Calcium and polyphenols in the same meal push in the opposite direction.
Where Mens Daily Multivitamin comes from.
There is no single factory step that makes a multivitamin. Every vitamin and mineral in it is made separately, some by feeding sugar to bacteria, some by chemical synthesis, some by shining ultraviolet light on a plant or wool-derived sterol, and the minerals from refined ore. Those separate powders are coated so they do not react with each other, blended with a little extra of each so the label still holds at the end of shelf life, and then pressed into a tablet or filled into a capsule.
The same molecule is reached more than one way. Which route a given product used is a manufacturing choice, and the finished compound is the same either way.
A multivitamin has no single origin. Vitamin C is produced by microbial fermentation of glucose through sorbitol, B12 comes from bacterial fermentation of Pseudomonas or Propionibacterium, D3 comes from lanolin or lichen sterols, vitamin E from vegetable oil distillates or petrochemical synthesis, and the minerals from refined ores and mineral salts.
Each nutrient is made by its own route. B12 is fermented, folic acid and biotin are chemically synthesised, D3 is generated by ultraviolet irradiation of a sterol precursor, and mineral chelates are formed by reacting a mineral salt with an amino acid or organic acid.
Every vitamin arrives at the blending plant as a separately purified and certified raw material with its own assay, contaminant limits and expiry. Provenance is therefore per-ingredient, and a single finished tablet routinely draws on more than a dozen supply chains.
Because vitamins degrade at different rates, formulators add an overage above the label amount so the declared value still holds at end of shelf life. Trace minerals and vitamins dosed in micrograms are pre-diluted into a carrier premix so they can be blended homogeneously.
Moisture-sensitive and reactive nutrients are encapsulated or coated before blending so that, for example, ascorbic acid and cyanocobalamin are not in direct contact in the same powder bed. This is why a multivitamin premix behaves differently from a simple mix of its parts.
The blend is compressed, encapsulated or cast. Fat-soluble nutrients suit a softgel with an oil carrier; gummies limit which nutrients can be included at all, since minerals contribute taste and several vitamins degrade in the heated gelatin or pectin base.
