The 5 to 1 astragalus and dang gui pair is one of the oldest fixed combinations in Chinese herbal practice, with astragalus polysaccharides on the qi side and dang gui polysaccharides and ferulic acid on the blood side. The pairing is defined by the ratio, not by the herbs alone.
Haemoglobin synthesis needs iron itself, which dang gui does not supply in meaningful amounts. Pairing it with a well absorbed chelated iron covers the actual substrate.
Ascorbate reduces ferric iron to the ferrous form and keeps it soluble at intestinal pH, raising uptake of any non-heme iron taken alongside a dang gui formula.
Ginseng is the qi tonic paired with dang gui as the blood tonic in the classical four and eight ingredient formulas, on the principle that qi moves blood.
Bai zhu is included in the classical formulas to support normal digestive absorption, on the reasoning that a blood tonic only acts if the gut takes it up.
Licorice is the standard harmonising herb in these formulas and its glycyrrhizin slows cortisol breakdown, which is why the dose is kept small.
Dang gui carries coumarin derivatives and ginkgolides act on platelet activating factor, so the two together extend normal clotting time more than either alone. This is an interaction to flag, not a formulation to build.
EPA shifts eicosanoid production toward less aggregatory thromboxane, adding to the coumarin effect of dang gui on normal platelet function.
High dose alpha-tocopherol interferes with vitamin K dependent clotting factor activation, which stacks with the coumarins in dang gui.
Allicin derived compounds reduce platelet aggregation, an additive effect alongside the coumarin content of dang gui.
Gingerols inhibit thromboxane synthesis at higher intakes, adding to the same platelet effect.
Curcumin at higher doses reduces platelet aggregation through COX and thromboxane pathways, which stacks with the coumarin content of the root.
Salicin is converted to salicylate, which acetylates platelet COX-1, so it compounds the same clotting-time effect.
Black cohosh acts on serotonergic and thermoregulatory signalling rather than on oestrogen receptors, a separate route from the phytochemistry of dang gui in formulas aimed at midlife hormonal transitions.
Vitex works through dopaminergic modulation of prolactin at the pituitary, upstream of the cycle, while dang gui is used for the blood and circulatory side of the same formulas.
Red clover supplies genistein and daidzein type isoflavones that bind oestrogen receptor beta, a receptor route dang gui does not provide.
Angelica species carry furanocoumarins and St John's wort carries hypericin, both of which raise skin sensitivity to sunlight. The effect is additive when the two are taken together.
Angelica sinensis contains ferulic acid and coumarin constituents that reduce platelet aggregation in laboratory systems, and nattokinase acts on fibrin from the other direction. Together they load the same side of normal clotting balance. This is a combination to raise with a clinician, not one to promote.
Bromelain reduces platelet aggregation, the same direction as the phenolic acid constituents of dang gui. A product carrying both is stacking two mild effects on normal clotting. The pairing has not been studied together and belongs on the caution side of the record.
Grape seed proanthocyanidins have measurable antiplatelet activity in laboratory and small human work. Combined with dang gui the effects point the same way. No study has measured the pair, so the row is mechanistic.
Vitamin B12 is the cofactor for methionine synthase, and without it folate is trapped as methyltetrahydrofolate and DNA synthesis in dividing red cell precursors slows. Dang gui is used traditionally in blood-building formulas but supplies none of that biochemistry itself. The nutrient covers a requirement the herb does not.
Folate donates one-carbon units for thymidylate and purine synthesis, which rapidly dividing red cell precursors depend on. A blood-support formula built on dang gui alone leaves that step uncovered. The pairing is nutritional rather than herbal.
Pyridoxal 5-phosphate is the cofactor for delta-aminolevulinic acid synthase, the first and rate-setting step of heme production. Iron without B6 leaves that step short of cofactor. In formulas positioned around normal blood formation this is the nutrient most often left out.
Ceruloplasmin is a copper-dependent ferroxidase that oxidises ferrous iron so transferrin can carry it. Without adequate copper, iron released from stores moves poorly. In an iron-containing dang gui formula this is the quiet dependency behind the iron.
Dang gui and rhodiola appear together in modern products positioned around energy and resilience. Nothing has been measured for the two together in people. The row records the formulation pattern honestly rather than implying an effect.
Schisandra lignans and Angelica sinensis constituents both alter cytochrome P450 activity in laboratory systems. Combining them puts two herb-drug interaction risks into one product. Anyone on prescription medication should have that conversation before starting either.

Dang gui is the dried root of Angelica sinensis. Three constituent groups are consistently characterised: phthalide volatile oils led by Z-ligustilide, phenolic acids led by ferulic acid, and water-soluble polysaccharides.
Z-ligustilide is volatile and oxidation-sensitive, so the extraction method decides how much survives. Water decoction loses most of it; supercritical carbon dioxide extraction concentrates it.
Angelica sinensis is not a meaningful dietary source of iron, folate or vitamin B12, so a formula positioned around normal blood formation gets that biochemistry from the nutrients included alongside it, not from the root.
Ferulic acid inhibits platelet aggregation and scavenges free radicals in laboratory systems, which is the pharmacological basis for the standing caution about combining Angelica sinensis with other agents that affect normal clotting.
