Asiaticoside and madecassoside are glycosides that gut bacterial glycosidases must hydrolyse to their aglycones before appreciable systemic absorption, so an individual's microbiome influences how much active compound a given dose delivers.

The aglycones asiatic acid and madecassic acid are lipophilic pentacyclic triterpenes, the physicochemical profile that allows a compound to cross membranes by passive diffusion rather than requiring a transporter.

This is the same plant as ordinary gotu kola, grown, dried and extracted the same way. What tends to differ is the specification: material sold for mental clarity is usually measured on the total of all four active compounds rather than on one, and is sometimes packed with phospholipids to help it disperse. One thing no factory step can change is that gut bacteria still have to strip the sugar off these compounds before the body absorbs much of them.
