Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaves contain dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins known as gypenosides, and several of them are chemically the same molecules as ginsenosides found in Panax ginseng.
Triterpenoid saponins are amphipathic: a sugar chain on one end and a lipophilic aglycone on the other, which is why they foam in water and why hot-water infusion pulls them out of dried leaf.
Saponin glycosides are poorly absorbed intact; gut microbes cleave the sugar chains, so the compounds reaching circulation are often deglycosylated metabolites rather than the parent molecules on the label.
Gypenoside content in the leaf varies with cultivar, harvest season and growing region, which is the reason extracts are standardised to a stated gypenoside percentage rather than sold by leaf weight alone.
Where Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) comes from.
It is a leafy climbing vine. The leaves are dried, steeped or extracted, cleaned up, and then tested so the label can state how much of the active saponins are in there. Where it was grown and whether the leaf was heated first both change what ends up in the bottle.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
A climbing cucurbit grown mainly in southern China, Vietnam, Thailand and Korea; the aerial parts, chiefly leaves and tender stems, are what carry the saponins.
Aerial parts are cut, then air- or oven-dried to stop enzymatic degradation. Some producers steam or heat the leaf first, which changes the saponin profile rather than merely preserving it.
Dried leaf is extracted with hot water or an ethanol-water mix. Ethanol pulls a wider saponin range; water alone favours the more glycosylated compounds.
The extract is concentrated under vacuum and commonly passed over adsorbent resin to remove sugars, pigments and other water-solubles before drying.
The dried extract is assayed, usually by spectrophotometry or chromatography, and blended with carrier to hit a declared gypenoside percentage.
