Rosmarinic acid is the principal hydroxycinnamic acid ester in Melissa officinalis leaf and is the marker most extracts are standardised to.
Ingested rosmarinic acid is largely hydrolysed to caffeic acid and then conjugated as glucuronides and sulfates in the gut wall and liver, so circulating forms are mostly conjugates rather than the parent ester.
The leaf essential oil is dominated by citral (geranial and neral) and citronellal, which is what gives the herb its lemon aroma and what distinguishes an oil from a phenolic-rich water or ethanol extract.
Melissa officinalis is a member of the Lamiaceae, the mint family, and shares its phenolic profile with rosemary, sage and peppermint.
