Anhydrous caffeine is the same molecule in a dry, fast-dissolving form, so the theanine pairing works identically. Formulas commonly run roughly two parts theanine to one part caffeine.

Theanine and caffeine occur together in the tea leaf, and green tea extract carries both plus the catechins. Adding isolated theanine shifts the leaf's own ratio toward the calmer side.

Shade-grown matcha is unusually high in theanine relative to its caffeine, which is the reason its stimulation reads smoother than coffee. Added theanine pushes that ratio further.

Suntheanine is a branded pure L-isomer theanine, so a second theanine line adds to the same total. The branded form differs by isomer purity, not by mechanism.

Theanine enters the brain on the large neutral amino acid transporter LAT1, the same carrier tryptophan uses. Taken together in quantity they compete for a limited number of transport sites. Spacing them apart is ordinary formulation practice rather than a safety issue.

Phenylalanine is one of the large neutral amino acids that share LAT1 with theanine at the blood brain barrier. A large phenylalanine dose reduces the fraction of theanine crossing at the same moment. This is transporter kinetics, measured in transport studies rather than in clinical outcomes.

Passionflower flavonoids are described as GABA-A positive modulators in preclinical work. Combined with theanine the sedative effect is additive rather than independent. Human data on the specific pair is limited.

Apigenin-bearing chamomile preparations bind benzodiazepine sites in binding assays, a different mechanism from theanine's. The two appear together in night-time teas and capsules. Count the pairing as traditional practice with mechanistic support, not as clinical evidence.

Honokiol and magnolol are described as GABA-A modulators in preclinical models. Layered with theanine the calming effects combine. Doses of both are usually kept modest in evening blends for that reason.

Ashwagandha extracts are studied for effects on the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and cortisol readings, which is a hormonal route. Theanine works on fast neurotransmission instead. The two cover different timescales of the stress response, which is why they are stacked.

Rhodiola is used for alertness under fatigue while theanine takes the edge off stimulation. In a daytime formula they pull in opposite directions on purpose, the same logic that makes the caffeine pairing popular. Controlled work on this specific combination is scarce.
