Ascorbate reduces phenoxyl radicals formed when a polyphenol such as rosmarinic acid quenches an oxidant, returning the polyphenol to its active form. That recycling relationship is standard antioxidant network chemistry.
Quercetin and rosmarinic acid sit at different redox potentials within the polyphenol network and hand radicals along that gradient. They also compete for the same sulfation and glucuronidation enzymes, so total polyphenol load matters.
Dihydrolipoic acid regenerates ascorbate and glutathione, which in turn return oxidised polyphenols to their reduced form. Rosmarinic acid therefore sits downstream of the recycling capacity lipoic acid supplies.
Catechins and rosmarinic acid are conjugated by the same phase two enzymes and both raise the total polyphenol pool. The antioxidant effects run in the same direction and the metabolic route is shared.
Rosmarinic acid is the constituent credited with lemon balm's GABA transaminase inhibition, slowing GABA clearance. Theanine acts on glutamate signalling and cortical alpha activity, a separate route to the same calm.
Magnesium is a cofactor for glutamate decarboxylase, the enzyme that makes GABA. Rosmarinic acid slows GABA breakdown, so mineral-side supply and botanical-side clearance meet on the same transmitter.
Valerenic acid modulates the GABA-A receptor directly while rosmarinic acid raises available GABA by slowing its transaminase. The receptor and the substrate sides of one pathway are covered by the pair.

Phospholipid complexation, the phytosome approach, pairs a polar polyphenol with phosphatidylcholine so it partitions more readily across the lipid membrane of the enterocyte. Rosmarinic acid is a poorly absorbed polar acid and is a standard candidate for this treatment. Reports on this are formulation science rather than clinical outcome data.
Phosphatidylcholine is the specific phospholipid used to build polyphenol complexes and it changes how the molecule crosses the intestinal membrane. Rosmarinic acid is largely cleaved by gut bacterial esterases into caffeic acid and dihydroxyphenyllactic acid, and further reduced to compounds such as dihydrocaffeic acid before absorption. Apigenin binds benzodiazepine sites on the GABA-A receptor while rosmarinic acid acts on GABA turnover, giving two entry points to the same inhibitory system. Its catechol groups donate hydrogen atoms to peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals and chelate transition metals such as iron and copper, the two mechanisms behind its antioxidant behaviour in chemical assays.
Intestinal and microbial esterases hydrolyse rosmarinic acid to caffeic acid and dihydroxyphenyllactic acid; these are further reduced and then conjugated as glucuronides and sulfates, so circulating material is mostly metabolites rather than the parent compound.

Where Lemon Balm (Rosmarinic Acid) comes from.
The leaves are dried and steeped, usually in hot water because the compound dissolves well in it. The liquid is filtered and concentrated, then tested to confirm how much rosmarinic acid it holds before being dried into powder. Some versions add a phospholipid to help the compound cross the gut wall.

Melissa officinalis is the usual source for a lemon balm ingredient, though rosemary, spearmint, perilla and sage all accumulate the same compound. Leaf is cut at the growth stage where phenolic content is typically highest and dried under controlled temperature.
Milled leaf is extracted with hot water or an ethanol-water mixture. Because rosmarinic acid is a polar acid, water pulls it efficiently, and pH is controlled to keep the ester from hydrolysing during processing.
Plant solids are filtered off and, where a high marker percentage is the target, the phenolic fraction is captured on adsorbent resin and eluted before vacuum concentration.
