- Suits people with dry winter skin, screen-tired eyes, or anyone wanting omega-7 from a plant. Seed oil and pulp oil are different oils, so check which you have.
- How much to take
- Start with 500 to 2,000mg of oil a day, the maintenance band, with a meal containing fat so the carotenoids and tocopherols come along with it.

Sea buckthorn oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids that oxidise readily, and tocopherol is the chain-breaking antioxidant that protects them in the capsule and in tissue lipids.
Tocopherol partitions into the same lipid phase as the oil's fatty acids and interrupts peroxidation chains there.
Ascorbate regenerates the oxidised tocopherol that protects the oil's fatty acids, and the sea buckthorn fruit itself is a natural ascorbate source alongside the oil.
Carotenoids need dietary lipid to form micelles and enter chylomicrons, and sea buckthorn oil is itself carotenoid-rich, so oil and carotenoid travel the same route.

Emulsified and nano-emulsified sea buckthorn oil preparations are formulated on exactly this principle. Smaller droplets change the rate of digestion of the oil, which is a formulation property rather than a new activity.
Sunflower-derived phospholipids do the same emulsifying job as soy lecithin without the soy allergen declaration. In softgel and liquid sea buckthorn products they keep the oil dispersed rather than separating. This is a manufacturing role, not a biological one.
Bile salts emulsify dietary fat and form the mixed micelles that carry fatty acids and fat-soluble pigments to the enterocyte. People with reduced bile flow absorb oils and their carotenoid cargo poorly. Supplemental bile components address the digestive step, not the oil's composition.
Pancreatic lipase hydrolyses triglycerides to free fatty acids and monoglycerides, which is the step that liberates palmitoleic and linolenic acid from the oil's triglycerides. Without that hydrolysis the fatty acids are not absorbed as such. Supplemental lipase acts on the digestion step common to any oil.
Vitamin D3 is absorbed as part of a lipid micelle, and taking it with an oil rather than on an empty stomach raises the fraction absorbed. Sea buckthorn oil functions as that lipid vehicle. The interaction is with the fat, not with anything specific to sea buckthorn.
Menaquinone-7 is a fat-soluble vitamin routinely supplied dissolved in an oil for that reason. Any dietary oil taken at the same time supports its micellar uptake. Sea buckthorn oil serves this role in combined softgels.
Lutein absorption depends on co-ingested fat, and sea buckthorn oil supplies both the fat and its own carotenoid load. Because carotenoids share micellar and transport capacity, a very large dose of one can reduce the measured uptake of another. The direction of the net effect depends on the doses involved.
Lycopene is highly lipophilic and its uptake tracks the fat in the same meal. Sea buckthorn oil provides that fat. As with other carotenoids taken together, micellar and transporter competition can blunt the gain at high doses.
Rosemary extract is a standard antioxidant added to unsaturated oils to slow the formation of peroxides during shelf life. Sea buckthorn oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids and oxidises readily, which is why such stabilisers appear in the ingredient list. The role is protecting the oil in the bottle.
Flaxseed oil is dominated by alpha-linolenic acid, and sea buckthorn seed oil also carries a meaningful share of it alongside linoleic acid. Combining them raises total alpha-linolenic intake by simple addition. Neither supplies preformed EPA or DHA, since conversion in humans is limited.
Sea buckthorn oil supplies plant omega-3 as alpha-linolenic acid, which humans convert to DHA at a low and variable rate. Preformed DHA covers that gap directly. The two are complementary sources rather than interchangeable ones.
Sea buckthorn oil and collagen peptides are frequently combined in products aimed at normal skin structure and moisture, working by unrelated routes: membrane lipids on one side, amino acid supply on the other. No trial isolates the pair. The pairing rests on formulation practice.
Hyaluronic acid binds water in connective tissue while an oil contributes lipid to membranes and surface films, so the two address different components of normal tissue hydration. They appear together in skin and mucosal formulas. No combination study measures them together.
The skin barrier is built from ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids in ordered lamellae. Dietary unsaturated fatty acids from sea buckthorn oil feed the free fatty acid component of that mixture. The biochemistry is settled; the combination itself has not been tested as a pair.

Procyanidin extracts act in the aqueous phase while the tocopherols and tocotrienols dissolved in sea buckthorn oil act inside membranes. Polyphenols can reduce oxidised tocopherol back to its active form in vitro. Whether that recycling matters at supplement doses in people has not been shown for this pair.
Resveratrol is a stilbene that partitions partly into membranes, overlapping the compartment where the oil's tocopherols sit. Both are handled as lipophilic constituents and share the same absorption requirement for dietary fat. No study has tested the combination.

Sea buckthorn pulp oil is unusual among edible oils for its high palmitoleic acid content, a 16-carbon monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid that is incorporated into membrane phospholipids and adipose triglycerides after absorption.
Sea buckthorn seed oil carries alpha-linolenic and linoleic acid in roughly comparable amounts; both are essential fatty acids that humans cannot synthesise and must obtain from the diet.
Alpha-linolenic acid from a plant oil is elongated and desaturated to EPA and then DHA by delta-6 and delta-5 desaturase, a route that operates at a low and variable rate in humans, so a plant oil is not an equivalent source of preformed long-chain omega-3.
The oil carries fat-soluble constituents of the fruit including tocopherols, tocotrienols and carotenoids, which are extracted with the lipid fraction rather than the aqueous one; vitamin C and the flavonol glycosides stay largely in the juice, not the oil.
Where Sea Buckthorn Oil comes from.
Orange berries are frozen off the branch, thawed and pressed. The soft flesh gives one oil and the seeds give a different one, so producers keep them apart or blend them on purpose. The oil is filtered, chilled to drop out waxes, tested for its fat profile and put into softgels or dark bottles.
Made from a plant. What ends up in the capsule tracks the harvest, so batch testing and a stated marker matter more here than with a made molecule.
A hardy shrub grown commercially across northern and central Asia, Scandinavia and parts of Canada. The berries are borne on thorny branches and are usually harvested by cutting and freezing the branch, since the soft fruit ruptures if picked warm.
Thawed fruit is de-stemmed and pressed to split the juice and pulp from the seeds. The two fractions carry different fatty acid profiles and are processed separately when a fraction-specific oil is wanted.
Pulp or seed is cold-pressed mechanically, or extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide at low temperature. Some producers still use hexane extraction, which requires a solvent-removal step afterwards.
The crude oil is settled or centrifuged to drop out solids, then filtered. Winterising, which is chilling and removing the waxes that solidify, keeps the oil clear at room temperature.
Batches are analysed by gas chromatography for the fatty acid profile, typically palmitoleic acid for pulp oil and alpha-linolenic acid for seed oil, and often for total carotenoid content. Blending across batches brings a lot onto specification.
The finished oil is encapsulated in a gelatin or plant-based softgel under nitrogen, or bottled in dark glass. Tocopherol or rosemary extract is commonly added as an oxidation stabiliser.
Labels often say sea buckthorn oil without stating whether the oil came from the pulp, the seed or a blend, which is the difference that determines the fatty acid profile.
