Artichoke leaf is a long-standing choleretic, used for its effect on the body's own bile flow, while ox bile supplies preformed bile acids from outside. One works on output, the other on supply. The traditional use is well documented; the pairing has not been trialled.

Dandelion root is a traditional bitter used for bile flow and appears in the same formula category. Bitter taste receptor stimulation is the proposed mechanism and it is not well characterised. Listed as a pairing, not as evidence.

What Ox Bile Extract actually does.

Ox bile extract brings bile acids already hooked to glycine and taurine, mostly cholate, deoxycholate and chenodeoxycholate salts. So what you get is a pool of detergents, not a hormone and not an enzyme.

Bile salts have a water-loving face and a fat-loving one: a rigid steroid core with hydroxyls on one side and a charged tail. Past a certain concentration they clump together and, with phosphatidylcholine, form the mixed micelles that ferry fatty acids, monoglycerides, cholesterol and fat-soluble vitamins to the gut wall.

By breaking fat into smaller droplets, bile salts give pancreatic lipase far more surface to work on. Bile and lipase are two steps in a row for fat digestion, not two ways of doing the same job.

Vitamins A, D, E and K, plus carotenoids, coenzyme Q10 and other strongly fat-loving compounds, only get absorbed once they are packed into micelles, which is why low bile salt levels in the gut cut uptake across that whole group.

Where Ox Bile Extract comes from.

It comes from cattle gall bladders collected at the abattoir. The bile is drained, filtered, concentrated into a paste and dried into a powder, and some products go a step further and pull out just the bile salts. Two things decide what you get: where the cattle came from and how the herd was controlled, and how gently the concentration was run, because heat changes the bile acids into a different chemical form.
